Fresh Drumsticks, also known as Moringa Pods, Murungakkai, Munaga Kaaya and Sahjan, are long green pods widely used in South Indian cooking. When simmered, the inner flesh becomes soft with a distinctive earthy, gently sweet flavour. Find them in our Everyday Vegetables collection or explore all fresh produce in Fresh Foods.
Cut the pods into pieces and simmer them in Sambar with toor dal, tamarind and spices. They also work well in coconut-based drumstick curry, rasam and soup. Once cooked, bite or split each piece and scrape out the soft inner flesh; the tough fibrous outer pod is normally discarded.
How do I prepare fresh drumsticks?
Wash the pods, trim the ends and cut them into pieces suitable for your dish.
How do I eat cooked drumsticks?
Scrape or suck out the soft inner flesh after cooking. The fibrous outer pod is generally not eaten.
Can fresh drumsticks be frozen?
Yes. Wash, dry and cut them into portions before freezing, then add them to cooked dishes as needed.
